Video Resources

As an educator, I designed and implemented a series of instructional videos to aid students in mastering essential academic tasks. These user-friendly resources provide step-by-step guidance on MLA formatting, Google Docs utilization, and various essay types. Developed with student needs in mind, each video offers clear instructions and practical demonstrations to streamline the learning process.

Problem

About 15 years ago, after teaching for just a year, I noticed students struggled to recall class topics. Recognizing their challenges, I decided to create instructional videos to provide effective resources. I've continually updated and expanded this video series, aiming to simplify complex topics and processes. With the shift to online learning, these videos have proven particularly valuable. My goal is to address student confusion, offering clarity and confidence in mastering essential academic skills, no matter the learning environment.

Thinking Critically

I critically evaluated various platforms, starting with Screencastify and progressing to Camtasia, QuickTime Player, and YouTube. Each platform offered unique features and capabilities, allowing me to tailor my approach to the content and audience. Through careful consideration and experimentation, I adjusted my video creation process to ensure clarity and effectiveness in conveying complex concepts. This iterative approach not only enhanced the quality of my instructional videos but also enriched the learning experience for students across different learning environments.

Solution

Implementing instructional videos proved transformative in addressing student struggles and creating a more efficient learning environment. This solution yielded tangible benefits:

  • Enhanced student comprehension: Videos provided visual and auditory aids, facilitating better understanding of complex topics.

  • Reduced inquiries: With clearer explanations available through videos, there was a notable decrease in the number of student emails seeking clarification.

  • Peer adoption: Colleagues, impressed by the positive outcomes, began incorporating video resources into their own teaching methods.

By integrating these videos into course instruction, I aimed to empower students with the necessary skills to navigate academic challenges effectively. Through engaging visuals and comprehensive content, students are equipped with valuable tools to excel in their academic endeavors. This comprehensive approach not only improved academic performance but also promoted a culture of collaboration and innovation among educators.

MLA Formatting Step-by-Step

This video was part of a step-by-step series that I created to help students understand how to use Google Drive, properly format a document in MLA formatting, and submit their Google Document to Canvas.

Rhetorical Analysis Overview

The Rhetorical Analysis Overview video is a micro-lesson I recorded to cover a complicated topic that would lead into the students' first essay.

Nouns: Common & Proper

During my time volunteering in the tutoring center, I was asked to create a series of straightforward, simple Powtoon presentations.  This one on common and proper nouns is part of a broader series focusing on various parts of speech.
