Course Design

As an instructional designer, I craft courses to meet high-quality standards, rooted in the Quality Matters' rubric, ensuring engaging and effective learning experiences. Each course promotes student success through structured content and multimedia integration, accommodating diverse learning styles. Guided by these standards, my process guarantees rigorous criteria in design, interaction, and accessibility. From clear objectives to detailed rubrics, every aspect is tailored for meaningful outcomes. My focus on excellence empowers students with the tools and support they need to excel academically.

Problem

Transitioning from fully face-to-face to incorporating an LMS component to fully online instruction was a significant adjustment. With this shift, challenges can arise with course organization and ensuring comprehensive content delivery. Struggling to design a course that facilitates easy navigation while including all essential materials and meeting all course objectives can be an obstacle. Recognizing the importance of accessibility and engagement, I prioritized redesigning courses to meet these needs.

Thinking Critically

I talked with colleagues about how they managed their own course design; I worked with instructional designers and curriculum specialists and designers to determine various best practices; and I conducted student surveys to determine where they were getting confused in the course. Furthermore, I leveraged my own professional development experiences and instructional design classes to explore innovative educational technologies and instructional design tools. I used all of this to guide me when making adjustments to course organization.

Finally, each semester, I made data-driven decisions. I created spreadsheets to analyze student performance, identifying patterns, trends, and areas for improvement. These strategies enabled me to continually refine course design and enhance student learning experiences.

Solution

For Composition I in particular, I employed critical thinking to address the challenges of transitioning to online teaching, resulting in a high-quality course design.

  • Meticulously outlining and aligning the curriculum ensured clarity of objectives and seamless navigation for students.

  • Collaboration with instructional designers and continuous professional development honed my skills, enriching the course content and instructional strategies.

  • Integration of multimedia elements and interactive activities enhanced student engagement and accommodated diverse learning styles.

  • Through ongoing reflection and adaptation, I refined the course design process, fostering effective online instruction and enabling students to excel academically.

Additionally, I implemented weekly emails, carefully crafted and adjusted for each term, to provide students with important updates, reminders, and additional resources. Weekly announcements were also utilized to maintain open communication and foster a sense of community within the course. These communication strategies facilitated student engagement, supported their learning journey, and contributed to a more cohesive and effective online learning experience.

As a result, students benefited from a well-structured and engaging learning environment, leading to improved academic performance and increased satisfaction with the course experience.
